[community profile] snowflake_challenge, Day 4:

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. And if you grant a wish, do the same thing!

1. A Xena fic where M'Lila travels to China and meets Lao Ma. They have lots of adventures together and live happily ever after.

2. More Xena and Buffy vids with undistorted aspect ratios. Sorry (not sorry).

3. Depending on how things play out, I might need fix-it fic for a certain aspect of Star Trek Discovery. :(

[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 3:

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. [personal profile] goodbyebird iconned Xena: Warrior Princess! I have heart-eyes for these and will be grabbing some if/when I get my paid account back*.

2. I love [tumblr.com profile] maariamph's adult!Steven fanart. Favourites: watering plants; charging on lion; hanging out with Connie.

3. [tumblr.com profile] restfield's amazing Drusilla manip.

*I'm planning to re-purchase my paid account once I get back in the habit of posting regularly. Please don't take this as a subtle hint that I want someone to gift it to me!

[community profile] snowflake_challenge  Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Of course there are lots of wonderful options here, from when I joined a Buffy forum in 2010 and came up with my online handle, to early ventures in vidding, to my first festivids, VVC, and VidUKon, and to the fannish home that I have found in VidUKon.

But a real treasure of a memory is when [personal profile] deird1, who I met here through Buffy fandom, contacted me because I was moving across the world to her city, and offered to pick us up from the airport and help us settle in. It was so wonderful already having a friend when I arrived.

I've decided to give 2018 [community profile] snowflake_challenge a go!

Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I apparently only attempted the challenge once before, January 2014. I made one post! /o\

But I like other people's posts, and I sincerely want to get back in the habit of posting and checking Dreamwidth regularly. I let my paid account lapse last October because I just wasn't using DW any more, except to post vids. But I like and miss people who are still active here, so I'm going to try to be more active as well. If I manage it I will reward myself by upgrading to a paid account again. So, well, I have a few things I hope to accomplish in 2018, and more time on DW is definitely one of them.

I didn't complete it last year -- let's see if I do any better this year!

Day One

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Having just completed the 30 day vidding meme and the year-end vidding meme, I'm going to focus on stuff that I haven't recently talked to death.

Before I started vidding or had a Dreamwidth account, my gateway fandom was Buffy, and my gateway fan site/forum was Critically Touched.  As part of that tiny little community, I reviewed a couple of Angel episodes, including the season 4 episode "Players", focussing on one of my favorite characters from that show: Gunn.  Here's my review.

One time I made a bunch of icons with one Buffy image.  The idea was that I was criticizing the notion that Buffy is self-righteous or sanctimoneous or whatever, and contrasting that notion with what she lives with and faces every day.  But also I was trying to be funny?  Yeah, it was a bit much for a newbie iconner, but I still like the idea.  I keep one of these icons in my list even though I've never, ever used it.  Because it only makes sense to me.

My first year vidding, I made a vid about The Black Stallion.  And I still really like it!  I'm pleased with the musicality of it, and I like how it captures the spirit of how I felt about the film as a kid, and why the film holds up as an adult.  (Nostalgia + pretty cinematography.)

[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 12: In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom. Rec a fandom overview, a introductory picspam, stories that define and shape the fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

They suggested to rec for a small fandom, but I'm going to rec for one of the largest: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Because I just love it that much.

Ten Things Buffy Does Best: A short, spoiler-free essay by Mike Marinaro, creator of Critically Touched and writer of the most thorough set of Buffy reviews I've seen.  Here he outlines why Buffy is his favorite show, and I totally agree.

The one thing I love about Buffy that Mike doesn't discuss is its wide range of female characters, its emphasis on women and girls' relationships with each other, and its celebration and exploration of female power.  So my second and third recs are for vids that showcase these aspects of the show with few spoilers.  There are many Buffy vids I love, but these are two that, by virtue of their emphasis on themes ranging throughout the series and their lack of spoilers, are great intros to the series.

Scarlet Ribbons by[livejournal.com profile] aycheb. Joss Whedon said that "the very first mission statement of the show was the joy of female power: having it, using it, sharing it."  This lovely vid captures just that aspect of the show, while contrasting this sort of "power with" that many women -- and some men -- exercise with the authoritarian "power over" represented by the "vampires, the demons, and forces of darkness."

Living Dead Girl by [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu.  Don't think for a second that BtVS essentializes female power as inherently better, gentler, or more egalitarian than male power.  This vid explores the "dark side" of power, and a whole bunch of other things, through the character Faith.  It is awesome.

Of course, one thing neither of these vids captures is the humor of the series.  For me, that is a huge part of the show's appeal.  It's just some of the funniest damn television I've seen.  And not only is it funny, it's can also be just plain heartwarming.  In a genuine way.  So I'll leave off with a vid that captures some of the humor, kindness, and warmth of the show.  Of course, a lot of the show's humor isn't visual, so this leans more toward the show's use of physical comedy, but hey, I love that too.

Smile, by [personal profile] charmax .  Made for a past More Joy Day!  Includes lots of Angel as well as Buffy.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 9: In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I started the day with a (likely) diagnosis of whooping cough.  Fun fact: the "whooping" is the sound you make when you've coughed all the air out of your lungs and you're gasping for breath.  Also: turns out vaccinations don't always work.

So, finally convinced that I Really Am Sick, I went home and spent the afternoon in bed practicing icon-making.  Here's what I got!  A few of these are ideas I got from other icons I've seen, though I don't remember where.  If anyone is the original maker and is offended or wants credit, please let me know.

I still don't really know what I'm doing, but it's fun anyway )

Day 8: In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal.

I have SO many fannish goals.  Here are the main ones.

1. Go to Vividcon!  This will be my self-reward for finishing my dissertation.

2. Vid for Vividcon!

3. Make a few vids aimed specifically at developing a new skill.  For instance, I'm starting to clip for my (hopeful) Club Vivid submission, and will be focusing on learning how to use -- and add -- motion more effectively.

4. Learn photoshop well enough to make passable icons.  I'd love to gain this skill as a way to make gifts for people, since I'll never be writing fic and making a vid is a huge endeavor.  Also, as much as I love many of the icons out there, I'd really like to be able to make my own.

(Day 7 was friendslocked due to cat photos.  I'll happily add you if you want; just let me know.)
