Pacific Rim

I finally saw Pacific Rim last night. At home, on my 15-inch laptop, just as it was meant to be seen. And now I:

1. know what y'all are talking about when you say "drift compatible". I had no idea that was from Pacific Rim. I thought it was one of those funny fandom things.

2. can watch those vids I've been holding off on for two+ years!

3. am pretty sure I'd have enjoyed it a lot more in the theater. I used to think of going to the movies as a bit of a waste of money, but since I moved (and I have a much higher disposable income!) I've come to enjoy it.

Like you, I saw it on the computer haha. I wasn't sure what to expect of it, but it was better than I thought, but for some reason, I still found it a bit.. empty? If that is the right word? I wasn't drawn to the characters as much as I would of liked to of been.

I've quite selective of what I see in theatres because of the cost these days haha. But there are certain ones I wish I'd seen, then others I'm really glad that I did!

Yeah, I honestly almost never get invested in characters in films, unless they really push a specific button, and none of them here did. Though I liked Mako Mori and am excited to see vids about her. Sometimes fanworks can make me like a show/film a lot more than I would otherwise, especially if they bring more depth to the characters.

Oddly, when I do get invested, it's usually in secondary characters who don't have as much screen time, or as big of a role as the main ones. I seem to find them a bit more interesting for some reason, the only problem is they are usually the ones that die.

I agree with fan works as well. It can make me see a character in a different light, or build on what was in the film, and make it into something so much more.

Another thing is books, I'll see a movie, and then read the book, and see how much they've stripped from some characters in the film, and it's sad.

And yes, definitely a cinema film. I tend to opt for the cinema more when it's action/fantasy/space, to really take advantage of those epic, swooping scenes. Comedies only if I'm fairly certain it'll be super funny bc I hate it when people are laughing a lot and stuff just isn't funny. I hate it. :p

Oh god, me too. I just remembered when I saw Avengers in the theater, and people laughed at lot of parts I didn't laugh at -- they weren't offensive, just...not funny to me? But then Tony Stark said, "am I the only one who did the reading?" and I laughed so hard...all by myself. I guess no one else in the theatre had quite as many years of reading and discussion group experience as me.

I watched it via a cheap LCD projector against a sheet taped to the side of the porch, which I think is actually the way it ought to be seen. :P

But yeah I still regret not making it out to a theater when it was showing. That is a movie with scale.

Thanks for the rec, that vid was lovely! I can already tell that I'm really going to enjoy Pacific Rim vids even if I was not super enthusiastic about the film itself.

Yeah, some movies -- especially ones in genres I'm drawn to, like action and scifi -- ought to be seen in a big screen. If you have a dark room and a projector at home, that's about as good, but computer screens or TV screens just aren't the same.

I enjoy PR more every time I've seen it, and the fact that I've seen it more than once (I rarely do, but I think I've seen PR four times?) must say something...but the first time I saw it, I remember being somewhat underwhelmed. And now I love it, even though not much about it hits me in the fannish id.

Oh interesting. If you have time/inclination, I'd be interested to know what changed. I really liked chaila's guest post on lady business, which I only read after the fact. It made some good points about things I hadn't noticed.
