Mad Max: Fury Road

I saw Mad Max, and I'm closer than I've ever been to being really, actively fannish in a big fandom at its height. Is MM:FR a big fandom? Or becoming a big fandom? Please tell me it is. I want to experience this big fandom thing.

I might go see it again, even. I never do that.

(Obviously my main fandoms, Buffy and Xena, are huge, but I came to them a decade+ late. It's not the same at all.)

More thoughts on the show later; I'm at my laptop at the kitchen table which is a big no no RSI-wise. Better sign off.

I would say, ride the wave! It might not be as big as MCU or some of the huge old fandoms, but there are already 32 works tagged with Imperator Furiosa on Ao3 (and 68 fics total) and I'd wager there's a lot of discussion about it somewhere.

It seems to be coming up on my Tumblr a fair amount? But yeah, it probably won't last long.

I would like it if it turned into a big fandom, but I'm not sure it's going to be so huge? There might be a lot of fannish squee, but much like Pacific Rim, I don't think it will spawn a lot of fannish activity, except for maybe some cool AF vids?

Ah, I can see it being Pacific Rim sized. (I still haven't watched that! Oops.) That's OK! I'm really bad at reading fic but I find I want fic for this movie -- world building, more of Furiosa and the Vuvalinis' backgrounds, etc.

My guess is that it is going to start flurry of activity that will last for a few months and then die down with an uptick when the next film comes out. In terms of fandoms for single movies I think it will be more like Pacific Rim than Inception.

I can guess the sorts of vids that will be made, but I'm having a harder time guessing what the trajectory of the fic will be -- I want it to be world-building gen, but my gut says it's going to be mostly Max/Furiosa or Max/Nux.

TBH, that amount of fannishness would suit me fine; I'm terrible at keeping up with stuff, especially fic.

Yeah, I pretty much always want gen fic and I'd love some world building and backstory fic.

Ugh, my heart sank a little when you mentioned Max/Nux fic. Ugh. I mean, to each their own, but if I actually take the time to go looking for fic -- which I never do! -- and it's a bunch of Max/Nux I am going to be really disappointed.

I was thinking about the headache that the nighttime scenes will be for vidders. They are so so so blue.

This is how I felt about Pacific Rim, and I expect Mad Max to end up pretty similarly. And it was fun while it lasted! It was a true summer fling fandom, there were a TON of graphics on Tumblr, enough fic to actually include a decent amount about the parts of the movie I cared about, and eventually several awesome vids, before it all died down naturally. So if this goes that way, I will be very happy with it!

And honestly I don't think I would've even wanted it to last longer than it did--it wasn't a life-changing movie, but I liked it and enjoyed it and it was fun liking something that many other people did, at the same time that they did. But I didn't like it so much that I could've sustained my interest in it for more than a summer. Movies are hard for me to care about, just because the character time is so naturally limited, so it's always fun when one breaks through that to really grab me.

So basically: active for a summer but not so huge as to be overwhelming (seriously how do ppl even navigate stuff like MCU anymore?!) = pretty great. :)

Yeah, that sounds like the right level for me. At first I was like I wanna ride that fannish bandwagon but actually I don't have a ton of time and I am terrible about reading fic (I've found a few Mad Max fics I like but it seems especially difficult to write, given how visual it is) and I really mostly just want to reblog gifs on Tumblr. And watch vids, once they start rolling out.
