does vidding ruin your vidsong forever?

I'm starting to wonder if I should think twice about vidding my favorite songs. "Starkville" is very high on a long list of Indigo Girls songs I looooove, but I still can't listen to it without thinking of the vid the whole time, to the point where the song is secondary. Plus vidding gets me listening to the song So. Many. Times and so of course I get a little tired of it.

Though a few weeks ago I was listening to Neko Case's Blacklisted, which I hadn't heard in some time. "Tightly" came on when I wasn't expecting it, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I wasn't haunted by images of "Under Stars" the entire time. So I guess it can wear off eventually. After two or three years. If you never re-watch the vid. /o\

Speaking of Indigo Girls and Xena vids I have made to their songs, I occasionally consider a post-series Gabrielle POV vid to Dairy Queen until I remember that it would break me. This song came on my mp3 player a few weeks after I watched "Friend in Need" and there I was, tearing up on the bus. Which is funny: that song used to make me cry because it reminded me of my ex-gf. Growth, maybe?

Sometimes I think I really should have just made a Xena fanmix and not a vid series. But I'm committed now.

Heh, well, the thing is that 1/3 to half the songs are vidsongs or at least potential vidsongs. But maybe once I've finished all the vids (and totally discarded the rest of the ideas) I'll post a fanmix as well. Glad to know you'd be interested!

lol I was listening to a song earlier and went, "wait, why are there cartoon ponies in my head?" and then realized that ah, this must have been the song chaila used in her Friendship Is Magic vid a couple of years back *g*

Once the visuals get in there with the song they usually stick with me. (oh god I have a song that will make me cry now, I've never had that before!)

Ha ha ha! But when it's someone else's vid, I really like associating it with a song; it always adds to to the music. But when it's my own vid, part of me is cringing in horror at this monster I've released on the world, and moments in the song are so tied into specific things I did, and I just can't enjoy the song like I did back before it was a vidsong or back when it was just a head-vid (and therefore perfect in a dreamy, ill-formed sort of way).

I'm not a big vid watched, but one that's stuck with me is also an Indigo Girls song, Galileo, from a vid about Aang and his reincarnations from AtLa. Also that vid to "Us" by Regina Spector, about fandom itself, but that's a very positive assocation, enhancing the song rather than making me solely think about the vid!

Ooh, that sounds like a great vid. I still so need to see AtLA! And I haven't heard of "Us" -- it sounds like a vid I must see now!

Yeah, other people's vids tend to enhance songs (and more often than not they are my introduction to the music). Not so much with my own though. :(

Aw yes, though I usually find that I get sick of the song while vidding, but once I post the finished vid it's like it's brand new again! I always see the vid playing in my head whenever I hear the song afterwards, but I only hate the songs if I'm still really unhappy with the vid, or if I've just outgrown the vid or whatever? If the song makes me remember my dissatisfaction with a vid, then it's ruined. There are a bunch of songs I vidded early on that I will probably never like again. But for the vids I still like or am proud of, I usually still like the song later? Though this is probably due to the fact that I perpetually listen to the same songs over and over, so if I stopped liking songs I've vidded, I wouldn't have anything to listen to!

Now, songs I *want* to vid but haven't yet, those are the ones I can't listen to! Unless I'm actively working on the vid. Otherwise they taunt me with their unfinishedness, it's terrible. :)

It sounds like you have a very healthy attitude toward your finished vids! I must study and learn from your ways.

I looove to listen to my vidsongs before I start vidding, and I generate a lot of ideas that way, but I have to strike the right balance between over-listening and the idea going stale on one hand, and on the other hand listening so little that I forget the idea entirely.

Of course part of the problem with that is also part of why I enjoy it so much: while I'm listening to the song (but haven't yet started vidding) I'm constructing a head-vid which is perfect and wonderful in a totally ethereal and dreamy way. Which makes the comparison to the first draft --or even the final version -- so hard. Though this is getting less common as my skills improve.
