Reprise of the December posting meme

ETA:  This is probably as many posts as I can handle in a month, but if you still want to leave a prompt, feel free and I'll get to it after the New Year!

Last year I did the December posting meme in January because I had out-of-continent visitors for much of the month, but this year I can do it at the same time as anyone else! So:

Pick a date below and give me a topic, and I'll ramble on. It can be fandom-related or not. Pretty much anything you've ever seen me post about unlocked, or comment on in other venues, is fair game. If a topic is uncomfortable for me (too personal or potentially identifying) or simply something I know very little about (unfamiliar canon, say), I may ask you to make a second choice. If you want to request more than one topic feel free, but in the unlikely event that I get more than 25 or so requests I may pick and choose between them.

ETA:  If you want a really specific date, keep in mind that I'll post on the day you request in my time zone -- nearly a full day ahead of North America and half a day ahead of Europe.

I like this! However I have to confess I haven't read any Xena fics. At all.

But I will take this prompt as an excuse to remedy that! If it works for you I'm going to put this on the last day I'll be online to give myself proper research time. :)

I guess you're more of a canon and vid fan than me? When I'm into something, I usually check out the fic. I did check out a couple of Xena fics, but haven't found anything so far that really worked for me. I think part of the problem was the old-fashioned fic aesthetic--I don't have much patience for epithets and the like.

Anyway, no pressure. : )

It's partly that, and it's also that I'm super lazy about seeking out fanworks of *any* kind outside of my DW reading list, authors/vidders I already know, and recommendations. And Xena fic just hasn't come up in those contexts. But I will totally look!

I would love to find some Lao Ma/M'Lila fic, but I don't have a lot of hope. I tried once but all I found was Lao Ma/Xena porn.

I wouldn't have realized that epithets (do you mean like slurs? Or something else?) are more common in older fic. Weird.

Ah no, I mean stuff like "the older woman looked into the blonde's eyes" instead of just saying "Xena looked into Gabrielle's eyes". Replacing people's names with short-hand descriptions of them, that kind of thing.

Oh! Yeah, that's annoying. I haven't read enough older fic to recognize it as a common thing, but I've encountered it in original fiction and I am totally with you.

(Also, just so you know, after editing I reduced my use of the word "totally" in this comment from three times to once. Well, twice now. LOL.)
