I finally figured out that, just because MPEG Streamclip doesn't want to open mkvs, doesn't mean I can't force it to.  So I'm spared the step where I use Handbrake to convert MKV to MP4 -- which I then clip into MOV.    Hooray!

Of course, the conversion is super slow, but I think that's just because the files are large, not because of the file type?  Well, anything that opposes my tendency to overclip is probably a good thing anyway.

So yeah, I'm vidding!

yay for you vidding!

I clip mkv to mov in mpeg streamclip, and yeah, it does take foreeeeever. but the resulting files are so pretty! I do definitely find that it helps me keep myself from overclipping a scene, lol.

Yup, Streamclip gives me audio with MKVs . . . are you working with an older version of Streamclip, maybe? The newer versions all have support for MKVs. I have Perian too, but that's obviously not your problem. Do you have the MPEG-2 playback component (Mac) or the 3vix MPEG-4 toolkit (Windows)? Those both affect MPEG Streamclip's effectiveness. If you have a Mac box and don't have the MPEG-2 playback component, lmk and I can email you some information about it. :)
