due South: Build a Rocket, Boys! by feroxargentea

Fandom: due South
Characters/Pairings: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Ray Vecchio, Harding Welsh, Renfield Turnbull, Sam Franklin
Rating: Mature
Length: 26,765
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: feroxargentea on AO3
Themes: Uncommon settings, Friendship, First time, Action/adventure, Complete AU, In Space

Summary: Androids are going missing on the giant spaceship Chicago! A Mountie and a space cop team up to investigate why, and to find their friend before it’s too late.

Reccer's Notes:
As I mentioned earlier, there are very few due South fics set in space - and this is an excellent one! The familiar due South characters and settings are translated into space, with their base being on the Spaceship Chicago, and Vecchio in trouble over at spacehub Vegas. There's action, adventure, banter, romance, plot and drama as Fraser and Ray work to solve the case and rescue Vecchio. A cracking read!

How Much Will TV Shows Matter?

There was a recent article in the Hollywood Reporter about how movies are the lifeblood of streaming services. Though I find this disappointing, I don't find it surprising. Movies are (often) a one-shot sort of story, quick to get through, and usually getting a lot of expensive publicity before their release date, thus raising awareness in a big part of the potential viewing public. And people rewatch a good bit because, again, it's short and doesn't require a big commitment.

The other two reasons are, I think, more recent in nature. One is that movie attendance has been declining for some time, but I never thought this was because people were less interested in them. It's just that it's expensive and inconvenient to go see them away from home. I mean, HBO was created in 1972 primarily as a home movie viewing option, as well as for some sports, which was also entertainment you had to go out for. And people were so interested in being able to watch movies (I won't even say "recent' because the theatrical run used to be pretty long), not even on demand, but on a convenient schedule, that HBO was a viable business for decades even as video rental became common. I'd add that it was common that, whether or not a hotel had cable, HBO was almost expected to be available as well.

But these numbers seem to indicate something besides the eternal popularity of movies and increasing desire to skip the theater and see them at home: Read more... )

Rating: Gen
Length: 4,117
Creator Links: HSavinien on AO3
Theme: Medieval Jousting, warrior recognizing warrior

Summary: Sir Samuel meets another knight lately returned from war shortly before the Midsummer tournament.

Reccer's Notes: One of the things I love about historical fiction is getting the voice of the time right. One of the things I love about fanfiction is getting the voices of the characters right. This marvelous story does both and so much more.

Looking for recs with unlikeable or deeply flawed women lead characters

My partner mentioned to me a while back that Eleanor Shellstrop from 'The Good Place' is one of the few lead women characters sey've seen who are awful in the selfish and mean way she is; usually they tend to be catty or bitchy (I've not yet finished S2, no spoilers please).

I was wondering what other lead women or girl characters come to mind that fit this dynamic? Hyacinth Bucket from 'Keeping Up Appearances' is the first to come to mind, a stunning performance of deep denial and heavy class pretentions (not sure if this was called something else in the US or other countries). Or on a darker note, Jill from the horror comedy 'Nighty Night' https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395404/ who is unashamedly vile.

Granted I've mostly been watching stuff with male leads recently, but I was wondering who else there is that fits this unlikeable or deeply flawed niche?

SGA: Antarctic Drift by smilebackwards

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Carson Beckett, Radek Zelenka, Jack O'Neill, Janet Fraiser
Rating: Mature
Length: 3592
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: smilebackwards on AO3
Themes: Uncommon settings, Action/adventure, First time, Complete AU, Fusion

Summary: Atlantis Prime is the best Jaeger ever built. Of course it is, Rodney built it himself. Too bad he can’t find anyone Drift compatible to pilot it with him.

John Sheppard was one of the best Jaeger pilots the program had, until he lost his partner in a Kaiju attack off the coast of Alaska. He’s not eager to go back, but the right Drift partner might just convince him.

Reccer's Notes: There are very few Stargate Atlantis AUs set in the Pacific Rim universe, and this is an excellent one. It's in two parts, a Fanvid trailer and then the story. Rodney (with Zelenka) has repaired and re-engineered the jaeger Atlantis Prime but can't find a partner to pilot it. John's a traumatised ex-jaeger-pilot who, after Holland's death, is reluctant to return to the fray. There's romance too, as part of them becoming drift-compatible. The trailer vid is cleverly done and works well with the story - both are very much recommended.

Summary: Before you wed me you must know.

Author’s Notes: _The Virgin Spring_ is a haunting tale. One night I dreamt this version, and was able to write it down.

Reccer's Notes: Rubynye transposes Ingmar Bergman’s adaptation of a medieval Swedish murder ballad into her beloved Bronze Age Crete; she gives this account of its creation in the comments:

I almost feel like I, my waking self, can't take credit -- I literally dreamt this, fortunately on a weekend so I could write it down, complete with the note about the refrain of "this they should not have done". I have loved the Minoans for a long time so it makes sense that my subconscious decided to retell the story there, as much sense as subconsciousnesses make anyway. The Minoans, with a different sense of morality and the universe, wouldn't ask "why did God let this happen" but would note how people in a society should and shouldn't behave (I think at least).

Dreamland delivered its gift to a formidably disciplined, well-read, and eloquent mind: the story begins with a classic fairytale riddle (whose answer will hinge upon a fluid definition of family) and is knit together by an insistent and anguished refrain; the author carefully avoids the film’s conflict of Christianity versus Norse religion in a setting where it would make no sense, furnishes researched hit-and-run cultural color (a traveler gifts her benefactors with the exotic delicacy of…stone-baked wheat flatbread!), and spares an innocent whose fate in movie canon was undeserved—allowing a family to be (though not restored) renewed.

Why to Watch Julia

Given that WGBH is now trying to raise an enormous amount to keep the station running, I thought it would be a good time to urge others to watch a show that features its early days. At least as the show "Julia" presents it, WGBH is the public television station that she made a success.

What Sorts of Things Happen in This Show?

Season 1 begins with Julia Child having published her first cookbook and then moving to Boston because her husband was pressured into retirement. However it soon becomes clear that Julia's life is about to start a second phase, and she has to maneuver a great many people into helping her achieve her goals.

In this, she has a co-conspirator, best friend Avis, and the brave and dogged Alice at WGBH who manages to get Julia onto a show as a guest and eventually into her own show. Julia also has the unwavering and in-person support of her editor, Judith Jones, who has to fight her own battles in her support for a less than highbrow book series.

The first season gives us a variety of looks at what life is like for even the educated and upper middle class women who are in Julia's circle (past and present) in a time where women are still very much struggling for financial independence and job opportunities. Julia's own role as a role model for women gets questioned at various points, even as the show makes clear throughout how easily and often women's contributions are erased or overlooked.

The tone of the show is clearly established as walking a line between being humorous and uplifting, and presenting more serious issues with a light touch. Read more... )

The Elevator Pitch

While food certainly is present in the show (each episode is titled for a dish), the show wants to both present the force of nature that was Julia Child, as well as how she created a large crowd of supporters from workmates to viewers. Her story also reflects challenges women faced in finding respect while pursuing their dreams in the mid 20th century. It ends up reminding me most of a less talky Gilmore Girls which focused on Stars Hollow.

Julia can currently be viewed via HBO Max in the U.S.
