These are excellent points! I very much agree, and I like the point you make that she gets significant development that doesn't revolve around John. I've seen some shows that give great character arcs to non-main characters, but usually those are more ensembly shows a la BtVS or TSCC, and, importantly, they're not a female love interest to the male primary protagonist.
