I didn't even notice that specifically, but you are absolutely right. There was also never any reference to certain people having more inherent magical abilities than others -- that's something that has often bothered me a little in other fantasy. Magic in the Golem and the Djinni is something anyone can do with the right knowledge and tools -- and disposition to seek out same. Though it seems to be physically taxing.
